Whether you are new to management or you are a seasoned leader, there are some fundamental skills that are intrinsic to success. Our management and leadership classes offer a collection of core skills to support managers in creating powerful working relationships that generate optimum results. Below are some of the key topics covered in our Management and Leadership Skills curriculum. They are divided into two groups: Basic and Advanced Skills. BASIC MANAGEMENT SKILLS

 
 

Masterful Communication Skills

Nearly everyone thinks they communicate well, yet the source of most breakdowns in results is poor communications. In this class, managers understand what it takes to be understood and, just as important, what it takes to listen powerfully. The skills taught in this module are like power tools for producing outstanding results and are fundamental to all interpersonal interactions. Practice is a key component of this class.

Communications that Empower

Many managers pride themselves for solving problems and making decisions quickly. This is important and useful except when everyone who reports to them dumps their problems on the manager’s lap! In this module managers learn to listen in a way that empowers those around them to solve their own problems quickly and effectively. Managers learn to listen for the core problem in a way that the direct report can see it clearly. The manager then skillfully guides the direct report to his or her own solution. Follow-up coaching from the manager is then negotiated. When managers do this, the direct reports begin to solve their own problems with skill and confidence and the manager is able to manage more effectively.

Performance Agreements that Work

Managers are asking people to do things all the time. When these requests aren’t followed through in the manner expected it can be costly on many levels. In this module managers learn the difference between expectations and agreements and the importance of establishing clear work standards. They learn and practice a process that allows them to make requests that are fully understood. They will know how to get a true commitment to producing the result needed.

Confronting Performance Problems

When working with people there will always be disappointments and the need to get back on the right track. Specifically, when agreements are broken things can become tense. This module builds on the PERFORMANCE AGREEMENTS THAT WORK module. It provides skills for addressing broken agreements and solving underlying problems so the results can quickly be produced while improving the relationship. Managers will also gain mastery in handling defensive behaviors.

The Gift of Conflict

Conflict is inevitable in complex human interaction. Blend needs, abilities, motives and styles and you can get the sparks flying. This class provides a healthy approach to managing conflict early and easily. Participants can identify and work with different conflict management styles. They practice with a model to manage and resolve the conflict including how to reveal the underlying needs so that a workable solution can be collaboratively generated. They also learn how to apply these skills to group settings.

Influencing Others With Style

There are many different ways to get a job done. But we all have our preference and patterns in how we get our results.  When someone’s approach doesn’t match our own we can become frustrated. Relationships and results can suffer terribly and unnecessarily. There are four basic styles used to get results.  When you can recognize other’s styles and appreciate their strengths and weaknesses, you have a foundation for teamwork and cooperation that can turn a nightmare into a dream. In this class managers learn to recognize different styles and adjust their own to influence others and produce surprising results

A disorganized manager who doesn’t trust their direct reports to produce the desired result, is simply not managing. How to Lead a Truly Great Meeting

People spend a tremendous amount of time in meetings. When asked they will tell you that most of these meetings waste too much of their time. Knowing how to plan for and run a meeting is essential. Knowing how to facilitate the difficulties that can arise makes meetings fun and highly productive…leaving more time to get the real work done! In this class we cover agendas, facilitation skills, use of norms and roles, conducting problem-solving meetings, brainstorming, and how to intervene when things go awry.

In today’s highly competitive, high performance, high velocity environment mentoring and coaching are essential to grow vital talent and future leaders. A separate session teaches seasoned professionals to skillfully coach and mentor top talent in knowledge, wisdom and skills critical to the organization’s continued success. In another class, those being mentored are trained to use the mentoring opportunity fully, skillfully and with the respect it deserves. A joint meeting is held to clarify roles, responsibilities and goals.

It is costly to hire new employees, especially when they are the wrong fit. This class teaches a methodology for hiring that is proven and effective. Participants look at the broader picture, ensuring they have a clear job description from which they can create a matrix of “musts” and “desirables”. Their questions are generated from this matrix and the managers conduct practice interviews using high level communication skills.  This ensures they get someone who fits the job well and not someone who “feels right”. The on-boarding process, which is often overlooked, is also reviewed.
